Dr. Zdenek Drábek is an independent consultant in international economics, serving primarily international clients. His clients have included foreign governments and parliaments, multinational companies, and international financial institutions. Previously he served as a senior adviser in the World Trade Organization and staff member of the World Bank. He was a co-leader of an international task forces on financial sector reform in countries in transition, a member of international task forces on Viet Nam, Ukraine, Macedonia and Czechoslovakia and on commodity risk management. During 1990–94 he served as the Chief Negotiator for the Czechoslovak Government of the Europe Agreements with the European Union and in the Uruguay Round of GATT. He also founded and managed the Czechoslovak Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (today “CzechInvest”), coordinated foreign assistance in Czechoslovakia, and led Czechoslovak business missions to European and Asian countries. Throughout the whole period of 1990-94 he acted as a senior adviser to the Governor of the central bank (“Czech National Bank”).
He has taught at Universities of Oxford, Buckingham and of British Columbia, at the Institute for Development and Economic Studies in Tokyo, the Joint Vienna Institute (JVI) and universities in Asia, Russia, Africa engaged in cooperation with the WTO Secretariat. He is currently a member of the Academic Board in the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, Prague. He is a co-founder and chairman of department of economics at the University of Buckingham (UK), and a co-founder of the JVI, a training institute of the World Bank, IMF, BIS, OECD, WTO and EBRD. Published widely in major professional economics journals and authored or co-authored 11 books. His latest books include Globalization under Threat, Is the World Trade Organization Attractive Enough for Emerging Economies? and Can Regional Trade Agreements Enforce Trade Discipline? He was a recipient of an international award for most frequently quoted economics articles, honorary doctorate from Shanghai and Schiller Universities, and numerous foundation awards. He was educated in Prague and Cambridge and has a doctorate in economics from Oxford University.
